Who can use it
Administrators with the storage permission. Copy-only note: 9bx copies recordings to your server; it never deletes or moves anything on the phone equipment itself.
Where: Settings → Storage.
The Storage page
"Keep your files on 9bx, or on a server you control. If your server is ever unreachable, 9bx holds new files and moves them across once it is back."
| Card | Shows |
|---|---|
| Where your recordings are stored | 9bx Cloud or Your own server, with buttons to switch |
| Status banner | Health of your own storage |
| Connection | The settings of your own server |
| Usage | Where the files are and the Transfer queue |
Choose where files live
| Option | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 9bx Cloud | Nothing to set up. 9bx keeps recordings and files. Counts toward your plan. Some plans sell it separately per GB ("Add 9bx Cloud Storage") |
| Your own server | Files go to a server you run. It does not count toward your plan; "No extra fee" from 9bx, you pay for your own disk |
Buttons: Switch to 9bx Cloud, Use my own server, Keep my own server. Switching to cloud asks "Store new files on 9bx Cloud?" and explains that files already on your server stay there. If cloud storage is sold per GB, the move happens after its invoice is paid ("Waiting for payment").
Install on my server
- Choose Use my own server then Install on my server.
- Follow How your own server connects: run one command on your server with a one-time token. The command installs the storage service and connects it. 9bx never logs in to your server.
- Enter the server's IP and choose an address: a 9bx address, or your own hostname (such as storage.your-company.com). For your own hostname, copy the record shown under it: a CNAME (recommended) to a 9bx address, which is the only record you need and never has to change if the server's address does, or an A record. You can send the request before the record exists; Check DNS is optional.
- Confirm it's you with your account password (and your authenticator code if two-factor authentication is on).
- The tracker at the top shows Send request, Approval, DNS record, Run the command and Connected. While the record is missing the page shows Waiting for DNS; 9bx checks every minute for the first 15 minutes, then less often, for up to 48 hours and sends you a notification and an email when it is Verified. Check now looks at once.
- Watch the install progress; when it finishes the status says Your own server is connected.
Until it connects, 9bx Cloud keeps your files ("9bx Cloud keeps your files until your server is connected").
Existing S3 storage
If you already have S3-compatible storage (Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, Amazon S3 or your own), choose Existing S3 storage and fill in:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Provider | Wasabi, R2, S3 or Other S3-compatible (changes only the setup guide) |
| Endpoint | Full URL including https:// (private and loopback addresses are refused) |
| Public endpoint | Only if browsers reach storage at a different address than 9bx |
| Bucket | Must already exist; 9bx never creates it |
| Region | If your provider needs one |
| Access key / Secret key | Scope them to this bucket; never paste root credentials. The secret is stored encrypted |
| Folder prefix | A folder inside the bucket; each organization gets its own subfolder. Cannot change once files are stored |
| Use path-style addressing | On for most self-hosted servers; off for Amazon S3 and R2 |
| Remove the 9bx copy once a file is verified on your server | Leave off until you have seen a week of clean transfers |
Then:
- Click Save. Any change switches your storage off until it is tested again.
- Click Test connection. 9bx writes a file, reads it back and deletes it ("Write, read and delete all work"). You see Connection works or Connection failed.
- Click Switch on. New files go to your storage. Switch off sends new files back to 9bx; files already on your server stay and keep working.
Playback shows whether recordings play straight from your server or are streamed through 9bx (when your server has no HTTPS).
The status banner
| Banner | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Your files are stored by 9bx | You have no own storage |
| Saved, not yet verified | Run Test connection |
| Tested, not switched on | Click Switch on |
| Connected and healthy | New files are being written to your storage ("{ms} ms round trip") |
| Your storage is having trouble | Recent requests failed; 9bx keeps retrying and, if it keeps failing, sends new files to 9bx |
| Cannot use your storage | Your server is not answering; new files are kept on 9bx and moved across once it is back. Nothing is lost |
| Your server's disk is {n}% full | At 95% new files go to 9bx until space is freed |
Usage and transfer queue
Usage shows files on 9bx storage (which count toward the plan) and on your own storage. The Transfer queue lists files that landed on 9bx while your server was unreachable and are waiting to move across (Waiting, Moving, Failed, Done) with "Oldest waiting since {date}". Sync now starts the transfer immediately. Move files to 9bx copies your files back to 9bx.
Switch back to 9bx Cloud
Use Switch to 9bx Cloud and confirm. New files go to the cloud; old files remain where they are unless you choose Move files to 9bx.
Example scenario
Padma Net Support records many calls and wants them on its own Dhaka server. Imran chooses Use my own server, runs the install command on a Linux server, and the banner turns to Connected and healthy. One night the server's disk reaches 95%: recordings go to 9bx automatically and Transfer queue moves them back after Imran frees space.
Tips
- Test before you switch on; "saved" does not mean "working".
- Keep the disk below 90%.
- Leave "Remove the 9bx copy" off for the first week.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
"Run a successful test first." Click Test connection until it passes.
New files are on 9bx although my server is on. It was unreachable or full; they move across later.
Recordings do not play. Check Playback; without HTTPS on your server they stream through 9bx.
I cannot choose my own server. Your plan does not include it.
The DNS record is "Not found". 9bx stopped checking after 48 hours. Fix the record so it is a CNAME to the 9bx address shown on the page, or an A record that points only to your server (proxy off), then press Check now, or cancel the request.
